What is Umrah in Islam?
Umrah (also written Omra or 'Umra) is the Islamic minor pilgrimage to Makkah (Mecca), Saudi Arabia. Unlike the Hajj — which is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and obligatory once in a lifetime — Umrah is a voluntary act of worship that can be performed at any time of the year. It holds immense spiritual reward and is often described as a "mini Hajj."
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "From one Umrah to the next is an expiation for what comes between them." (Bukhari & Muslim). Performing Umrah is one of the most cherished acts a Muslim can undertake — a journey of purification, devotion, and closeness to Allah.

- Ihram — Entering the sacred state of purity before the Miqat
- Tawaf — Circling the Kaaba 7 times counter-clockwise
- Sa'i — Walking 7 times between Safa and Marwa
- Tahalul — Shaving or trimming the hair to exit Ihram
Umrah vs. Hajj — Key Differences
Umrah can be performed year-round, while Hajj only takes place during specific days of the Islamic month of Dhul-Hijjah. Hajj includes additional rites such as the standing at Arafat, the night at Muzdalifah, and the stoning of the Jamarat. Umrah takes approximately 3–5 hours to complete, while Hajj spans 5–6 days. Both begin in the state of Ihram at the Miqat and both involve Tawaf and Sa'i.
When Can You Perform Umrah?
Umrah is open year-round except during the days of Hajj (8–13 Dhul-Hijjah). The most rewarding time to perform Umrah is during Ramadan — the Prophet ﷺ said that Umrah during Ramadan is equivalent in reward to performing Hajj with him. Other popular times include Rajab, Sha'ban, and the first 10 days of Dhul-Hijjah.
